Lapis Lazuli

Actually the lapis lazuli is a rock because it is an aggregate of several different minerals. But calling it a rock wouldn’t do much justice to its beauty!

The lapis is usually opaque its colors are medium to dark greenish “navy” blue, pure “royal” blue, or violetish “midnight” blue.

Depending on where it is found, the lapis sometimes has white veins (calcite) or gold-looking flakes from a mineral called pyrite.

Afghanistan is known to produce lapis from the finest quality. Other sources are Chile and Russia.
