Apatite

Apatite (no, not ‘appetite’), is a very common mineral. But transparent gemstone-quality apatites? They are extremely rare.

Apatite is derived from the Greek word for ‘cheat’. The apatite closely resembles several other gemstones that are often more valuable and thus gets easily mistaken for these pricier gems.

Apatite is found in several places in the world, including Birma in Myanmar, India, Kenya, Brazil, Norway, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Madagascar, Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Madagascar is known for its very popular neon blue-green variety. Another breathtaking variety is a rich purple apatite from Maine.

Connoisseurs often seek out rare colors such as Paraiba-like blue-green apatite or leek-green apatite, which is known as 'asparagus stone'. Deep purple, violet and reddish specimens are also sought-after.
